Timber sash windows are made up
of one or two panels, which also serve as the frame that holds the pane of
glass. The panels in sash windows are moveable
and often slide vertically or horizontally. The design of these windows was
first introduced by an English inventor, Robert Hooke. These windows have a
long history and are believed to be installed in late 16th century. Such window
designs are still used in some parts of England, as they represent the old
architect and culture. Though, this window style seems practical and
historical, but it also requires repairing and maintenance for proper
functioning. Sash window repairs are significant to keep the windows in proper
shape and function. Sometimes, repairs to timber sash windows do not require
any professional help and can be done by individuals who have the home tools.
Firstly, to start off with sash
window repairs, people need to check the mechanism of their windows. There are
mainly three types of sash window mechanisms, single hung sash, double hung
sash and horizontal sliding sash. After checking the mechanism, the next step
is to gather up the tools. The tools that would be required for sash window
repairs include lubricants, utility knife, stiff puffy knife, hammer, rope and
screwdriver. To start repairing, people need to remove the window and window
casing in order to open the panel cover. When the panel cover is opened the
sash cord, weight and pulley will be visible. Next step is to lubricate and
clean the pulleys. After lubricating, the next process is to replace the old
cord with new one.
Then the weights need to be
secured, which is done by tying a knot at the end of each sash cord. After
securing, weights need to be put back in the jamb and slid back into the panel.
At this step the repairing part is done and now the window should be checked
for their proper functioning. However, if after following all these steps,
window still seemed jam, then the last option is the replacement timber sash windows. Timber sash windows can be done by hiring professionals or architects. However,
people who don’t want to spend their money on professionals can also replace
them by their own. Just like repairing, the replacement wooden windows process
just need to follow some simple steps.
