Timber sash windows are made up of one or two panels, which also serve as the frame that holds the pane of glass. The panels in sash windows are moveable and often slide vertically or horizontally. The design of these windows was first introduced by an English inventor, Robert Hooke. These windows have a long history and are believed to be installed in late 16th century. Such window designs are still used in some parts of England, as they represent the old architect and culture. Though, this window style seems practical and historical, but it also requires repairing and maintenance for proper functioning. Sash window repairs are significant to keep the windows in proper shape and function. Sometimes, repairs to timber sash windows do not require any professional help and can be done by individuals who have the home tools.

Firstly, to start off with sash window repairs, people need to check the mechanism of their windows. There are mainly three types of sash window mechanisms, single hung sash, double hung sash and horizontal sliding sash. After checking the mechanism, the next step is to gather up the tools. The tools that would be required for sash window repairs include lubricants, utility knife, stiff puffy knife, hammer, rope and screwdriver. To start repairing, people need to remove the window and window casing in order to open the panel cover. When the panel cover is opened the sash cord, weight and pulley will be visible. Next step is to lubricate and clean the pulleys. After lubricating, the next process is to replace the old cord with new one.

Then the weights need to be secured, which is done by tying a knot at the end of each sash cord. After securing, weights need to be put back in the jamb and slid back into the panel. At this step the repairing part is done and now the window should be checked for their proper functioning. However, if after following all these steps, window still seemed jam, then the last option is the replacement timber sash windows.  Timber sash windows can be done by hiring professionals or architects. However, people who don’t want to spend their money on professionals can also replace them by their own.
